James Fisher Strainstall monitors tension in Vietnam

James Fisher Strainstall has won a contract to supply its load monitoring system to an innovative oil and gas platform being built off the coast of Vietnam.

Construction work has just begun on the platform which will be the first to pioneer a three-column tension leg design. James Fisher Strainstall (JF Strainstall) has been commissioned to provide subsea load cells which will feed tension data via connectors developed and supplied by sister company, RMS Pumptools, through to the JF Strainstall Tendon Tension Monitoring System (TTMS) software to be monitored and analysed.

This information can be used to monitor the stability of the platform and inform operators in real time of the condition of the platform mooring, issuing warnings if it is subject to conditions which fall outside established operating parameters.

This is the first three-column platform in the offshore oil and gas industry. Four-column platforms are the norm at fields around the world but drives for cost efficiencies have led to new innovations across the sector.

Commenting on the new configuration and JF Strainstall’s bespoke monitoring solution, Frank Rose, marine systems engineer at JF Strainstall says:

’This innovative design will deliver cost efficiencies at a crucial time in an industry. Because of the new design, monitoring the structure's stability is very important, and our system will providing valuable data which will increase safety and protect the platform itself.’

The three-columned tension leg platform will be secured to the seabed via six tendons each of which will house three of JF Strainstall’s subsea load cells configured in a ring around the tendon. These load cells will be connected into data acquisition junction boxes.

Once up and running, this data will be fed into the TTMS software package which converts signals into vital tension information. This information is sent from the un-manned platform to the operating control room on a nearby floating production, storage and offloading unit. 

When complete in 2019, the platform - off the Southern coast of Vietnam, will host up to 20 wells.
